The Deaf Development Program (DDP) is run by Charlie Dittmeier a Mary Knoll Missionary. There is no charge to attend. When I spoke with Charlie last week he told me how the kids flourish in school. Many have never met another deaf person. They become friends quickly. In Soporn's case her right ear is deformed and she keeps it covered with her hair. He explained to me that they will have her examined by an NGO group. It may be that her ear canals are just not open. Can you imagine not even being able to have this basic exam? If needed the NGO group will provide any surgery as well as a hearing aid if needed. We will keep you all posted!
Again thank you all for helping us. You can sleep at night knowing you made a difference!
If anyone is interested in sponsoring Soporn for a month of school please click on the "Donations" link.
God Bless
When we visited in July we had given each of the Hilary's sisters $200 and her uncle $200 as well. Since Soporn lives with the uncle and his family her money went to support the entire family living in their house. While visiting we noticed that he had several 12' concrete pillars (stilts). It was my understanding that he was waiting for enough money to repair his house. These pictures were taken in October just a few months after we departed. As you can see $400 goes a long long way in Cambodia. He built an entirely new home. Hilary's other sisters used their money for food, clothing and medicine for their families.
On October 25th Toeun (second from left) gave birth to a healthy baby boy. She and her husband were able to move into the uncle's old house. She now does not have to raise her baby in a little shack only a few feet off the ground. That would surely get flooded when the rainy season hits. Thank you all. You have no idea what a difference your donations have made in the quality of life for so many (Quite possibly the life of her little baby boy).
We have a small balance remaining but will continue to fundraise. We were able to get Soporn (far right in picture) into the school for the deaf located in Phnom Penh. She is very excited. Spending her whole life watching everyone else attend school has been very difficult on her. Now it is her turn to shine!
Since she currently lives several hours from the school we are working to locate a place for her to stay in the city. We have several options. For appproximately $75 a month we can get her a room near the school and provide her meals. We will purchase a bicycle for her to get back and forth to school as well.
Interestingly, in all of the pictures we have received from the Lek family over the past eleven years, Soporn has never been smiling in any of them. This last group that Yoen has sent she is smiling from ear to ear. He told us that is because she just found out about being able to go to school. She will attend the school with other kids in their twenties who have had the same experiences as she has. The program is two years long and goes from January to November. The kids are taught basic math and given a general education. After completing the two year program they can go on to a trade school at no cost. Soporn may well be the only child in her family to become self sufficient. Maybe our next trip over will be for graduation!
A very interesting article about the school and the deaf community can be found at
IT'S A BOY!!
Thoeun gave birth to this little guy on October 25. So far both are doing very well. Can't give you a name because in true Cambodian Fashion they just have gotten around to giving him a name!
